Please help me install the XReply Chrome extension (prefer Chrome Web Store; use zip manual install only if needed).

1. If using the store: open https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/pimnhmgdpdmoifmmhbepejglbbbchghh?utm_source=x.asiones.com and add the extension.
2. Manual install: download https://x.asiones.com/downloads/xreply-latest.zip
3. Unzip to a stable folder (e.g. ~/Documents/xreply or %USERPROFILE%\Documents\xreply). Do not delete or move it later.
4. Confirm the folder contains manifest.json, background.js, content.js, options.html, and icons/ at the top level.
5. Guide me: open chrome://extensions (Edge: edge://extensions) → enable Developer mode → Load unpacked → select the folder that contains manifest.json.
6. If the browser asks to disable developer-mode extensions, choose Keep. Do not load the zip itself or a parent empty folder.
7. After load, open settings: cloud mode → sign in with 𝕏, or BYO API → fill Base URL / Key / model.

1. Unzip the package

  1. Extract the zip

    macOS: double-click xreply-latest.zip to get a folder with manifest.json, background.js, etc.

    Windows: right-click → Extract All… → choose a stable path (e.g. Documents/xreply).

    Remember this path. The extension needs the folder to stay put; if you delete or move it, reload the extension.

  2. Confirm contents

    You should see at the top level:

    • manifest.json
    • background.js, content.js, options.html
    • icons/ directory

    Load this folder (the one that directly contains manifest.json), not its parent and not a single file.

2. Load the extension

  1. Open extensions page

    In the address bar:

    Chrome / Brave / Arcchrome://extensions
    Edgeedge://extensions

    Or: browser menu → Extensions → Manage extensions.

  2. Enable developer mode

    Turn on Developer mode (top right). You should see Load unpacked.

  3. Load unpacked

    Click Load unpacked → select the unzipped folder → confirm.

    XReply should appear in the list with a version number.

  4. Pin to toolbar (recommended)

    Puzzle icon → XReply → pin. Click the icon to open settings.

Normal browser warnings
  • If asked to disable developer-mode extensions, choose Cancel / Keep.
  • Zip loads show an “unpacked” / developer badge (store builds do not). Do not enable store + unpacked builds together.
  • Do not delete or move the unzipped folder or the extension will break until you load unpacked again.

3. Choose a mode and sign in

  1. Open settings

    • Extensions page → XReply → Details → Extension options
    • Or the toolbar XReply icon if pinned

    Settings often open automatically on first install.

  2. Pick a mode

    Cloud (default)

    Sign in with 𝕏 in settings — no key or model. You can also use the account page for quota and plans.

    Bring your own API

    Fill Base URL + API Key + model (OpenAI-compatible, including local). The first non-default host may prompt for host permission — allow it.

4. Reply on X

  1. Open a reply dialog

    On x.com or pro.x.com, click Reply. XReply works only in the reply modal, not the inline composer on the detail page.

  2. Wait for the grey suggestion

    Suggestions appear as grey text (not yet committed). Three candidates are prepared each time.

  3. Shortcuts

    ↑ / ↓Switch suggestions. More are generated when you reach the end.
    TabAccept the current suggestion into the composer.
    Option/Alt + TabRewrite what you already typed. macOS only; Windows Alt+Tab is owned by the OS.

5. Custom prompts (optional)

Edit system prompts in settings (BYO) or account (cloud). Variables:

${post}Post text (generate & rewrite).
${draft}Current draft (rewrite only).

Replies must be wrapped in <reply></reply>. Keep that requirement when you edit prompts.

Cloud prompts live in the cloud; BYO prompts stay local — they do not overwrite each other.

6. Updating the extension

  1. Download again

    Return here and download the latest zip.

  2. Overwrite

    Extract over the same folder (or a new one).

  3. Reload

    On chrome://extensions:

    • Same path: click the reload arrow on the XReply card.
    • New folder: remove the old extension, then Load unpacked again.

FAQ

Why prefer the Chrome Web Store?

Easiest install and automatic updates. Zip/developer mode is for other Chromium browsers, testing latest builds, or avoiding the store.

Can Codex / Claude install it for me?

Yes — see AI-assisted install. They can download and guide; you still toggle developer mode and pick the folder.

Error “manifest missing” or “could not load”?

Wrong folder level. Select the folder that directly contains manifest.json.

Extension greyed out or broken?

Check the unzip path was not deleted or moved. Cloud users: confirm you are still signed in in settings.

No grey suggestion in the reply box?

Confirm: (1) reply modal not inline composer; (2) cloud signed in with quota, or BYO fields correct; (3) XReply enabled. Check the service worker console if needed.

Option+Tab rewrite on Windows?

Windows Alt+Tab is system-owned. Use ↑↓ and Tab; rewrite on macOS, or edit manually.

Is developer mode safe?

It only allows loading unpacked extensions. Only install from this site (x.asiones.com). Do not load untrusted folders.

Notes
  • Auto-generate only in the reply modal.
  • Option+Tab rewrite works on macOS; not on Windows.
  • You can keep using zip for latest builds; do not enable store + unpacked versions together.
